1957 DEVIN S
In the new frontier of American sports car racing in the early 1950s, Bill Devin was a hugely influential character and an active participant in motorsports – graduating in short order from a 1949 Crosley to a Ferrari 166MM Touring Barchetta. As an engineer, he was an innovator – creating the first belt-driven overhead cam automobile engine in 1955 – but he never patented it. As a designer, he found particular success with his popular line of fiberglass bodies, which budding racers fitted to just about any chassis from Crosley to Corvette to Bandini. He followed that with a series of purpose-built sports cars, based on a tubular chassis designed alongside Noel Hillis and Malcom MacGregor, fitted with a DeDion rear axle, and off-the-shelf components from contemporary cars including Triumph, VW, Porsche, and Chevrolet, and always topped with Devin’s stylish sports-racer bodies.

Chassis Number S 71527 is a Triumph TR2-based Devin kit, originally built by West Coast racer James Gary, and run in a handful of events in the late 1950s under the Gary Racing banner. Sometime in the early 1960s, the Gary Special was sold to an enthusiast in Chicago, when the Triumph 4-cylinder engine made way for an aluminum Buick V8. It made its way to Ontario, Canada, living a quiet life until its discovery in Nova Scotia in 2008. As part of a complete restoration, it was prepared for rallying with a slightly later Triumph chassis and uprated 4.1-liter Rover V8. Now resplendent in a deep red livery, this fabulous Devin features chrome wire wheels, side exhaust, black leather bucket seats, and dual roll-hoops and would make a thrilling entry into events like the Colorado Grand or Copperstate 1000 where the nimble chassis and light-alloy V8 engine can be fully exploited.
