1930 RILEY 9 BROOKLANDS
This marvelous pre-war British racer is believed to be the earliest example of a “Brooklands” specification Riley 9. This car, chassis 8046, was developed for competition by specialists Thompson & Taylor at the behest of the Riley works, receiving numerous modifications including a competition-spec Works engine, and lightweight aluminum body. Registered as GJ18, it was delivered in 1931 to well-known British driver Whitney Straight who campaigned it in numerous events including Brooklands and Shelsley Walsh. While owned by Brian Steadman in the late 1930s, it was raced by the legendary Denis “Jenks” Jenkinson, who documented his experiences in the July 1943 edition of Autocar.
Subsequently restored, this marvelous and lithe Riley has participated in prestigious events including Le Mans Classic, Le Mans Legends, and the 2009 Monterey Historics. It is highly eligible for prestigious races and rallies worldwide, yet is eminently usable for casual weekend touring on tour favorite B-roads.
